Clinical Depression: The Terror and the Hopeful Promise

Of all the issues I have dealt with in my career as a Counseling Therapist, none has been as powerful as that of Clinical Depression. Depression has the power to either trap us in hopelessness and helplessness, or it has the power to prompt us to seek help, and then possibly to lead us into a meaningful, purpose-full life journey. The thing that has amazed me about depression, more than anything else, is how subtle it can be-- how it kind of “grows on” a person. Clinical Depression does not often come in the front door at all. No, it often slithers in the side door, barely noticed, inching its way toward destruction by way of negative thoughts, obsessive ruminating, fatigue, feelings of guilt, and low motivation to do anything about one’s situation. A person becomes mildly depressed, begins to isolate himself from others, and then the isolation creates more depression and loneliness, etc. You can see how the cycle intensifies... Depression is the ultimate energy-zapper. I can’t think of any combination of energies that could possibly be more detrimental to human beings than these…
Over 70,000 studies have been conducted on Clinical Depression, and the following are some of the decisive findings:
1. Clinical Depression is primarily a brain chemical disorder and it can be extremely genetic. Therefore, people with depression should not be any more ashamed of that than they would be if they were diagnosed with a Vitamin A deficiency.
2. Clinical Depression is socially contagious. Because it produces negative energy, it most definitely CAN affect everyone around, especially in families who are living in the same household. One way to spot the subtle effects of depression in a person is to notice how difficult it is for him/her to sustain feelings of joy for very long. Without meaning to, they tend always to gravitate back to negativity.
3. The most effective treatments have been found to include a combination of the appropriate class and dosage of antidepressant medication and talk therapy, most specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Cognitive Behavioral therapy helps a person regain control of chronic negative thought patterns.
Please, if you think you or someone else you care about may be Clinically Depressed, just know that there is hope. I have watched the miracle of transformation occur all of my adult life as a Therapist. I have watched it occur even MORE in the last 5 years, due to the advancement of the science of antidepressant medication with very few side effects. The science of the brain has advanced to such a degree now that we are experiencing a major breakthrough in the production of new medications for depression that actually remove the fog of hopelessness from a person’s brain and frees them to wake up to joy and meaning in their lives. If I were 25 and searching out a career these days, I’d look into neuroscience (the science of the brain). Like they say in the song "Accentuate the Positive", don't "mess with Mr. In-Between", my friends! A subtle malaise of low-grade depression can grow on you like a cancer and eventually steal your life. Don't mess with it. Seek help. It really is out there. I promise you that.
