ABOUT PROCRASTINATION AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT
Anne Milligan, LCSW.
September 9, 2012

One of the signs of a healthy mind and a healthy life is the ability to set goals and meet them. It seems that we are constantly being pushed forward by a natural human propensity for change, and yet many times we find ourselves resistant to taking the steps. Even the smallest tasks, at times, are met with resistance and delay. The problem with such delay is that the procrastinator is left with a feeling of incompletion and that can produce feelings of guilt (which just exaccerbates feelings of low motivation). There are several possible reasons for procrastination and I'll begin by listing some of those:

  • Low level (or dysfunctional type of) motivation (see the next section below).
  • Low energy due to a physical condition
  • Internal resistance and/or passive aggression regarding the task at hand
  • Fatigue and lethargy from Clinical Depression
  • Low energy from sleep deprivation
    Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Repressed Anger
  • Low physical or mental energy due to the use of certain "downer" medications or other drugs such as marijuana or pain pills
  • "Stress overload"
  • The internal discouragement of perfectionistic standards for oneself
  • Fearing, or even expecting, disapproval from another ("so why even try"?)

IDEAS FOR OVERCOMING THE PROCRASTINATION

Please be sure to read the links in the above section to get an idea of what may be causing your procrastination. Also, you may consider talking this out with a Licensed Therapist in your area. If you wonder if you are Clinically Depressed, please read the following article:
Clinical Depression

Motivation is one of the most important keys to understanding and overcoming procrastination. We can either be motivated by external rules/obligations or internal needs or desires that fit with our OWN sense of empowerment and choice-making. Research studies show that if our internal sense of motivation does not fit with the external rules or obligations, it is going to be very difficult to overcome resistance.
